10 Pieces Of Advice For Getting Over Your Biggest Health + Fitness Hurdles
I've always loved health + fitness but as I've gotten older and am now a mom of three, I see all the hurdles + reasons of why I could skip but realize more than ever, why I have to overcome. Here, I'll share 10 pieces of advice for getting over your biggest health + fitness hurdles.
Make A Commitment. There are ten million excuses as to why you can't, won't or may start tomorrow. Step one is making a commitment to yourself. This doesn't have to be a lose 15 lbs in 30 days commitment. Make a commitment to choose health + fitness for you! Does this mean breaking a daily sweat? Hitting the gym? Choosing a healthier food option? Make a commitment to start.
Set A Goal. Don't go crazy. Be realistic. If you're someone who doesn't typically hit the gym, Don't commit to go everyday. This could be a weight loss goal, fitness goal, nutrition goal or lifestyle goal. Look at your schedule and your lifestyle and set realistic expectations on what that looks like for you!
Write It Down. Did you know you're 90% more likely to reach for a goal that you've written down? I live by a calendar. Literally, stays in my purse. I have everything from our family schedule, work schedule, fitness schedule, daily activity and what I'm feeding the family for dinner! Write down your schedule and you're more likely to achieve your goal!
Find Your Why. This may sound a little weird to those of you that have never asked yourself WHY. Ask yourself why you're choosing to shoot for that goal and where you'd like to see results. My why comes from a recent health scare. I want to make sure I'm as healthy as possible to watch my kids grow up! I enjoy sweating and pushing my body. Exercise is imperative for my mental health. It's a way for me to release energy and take some time for myself which in turn, makes me a better mom when I'm with my kids. Health and fitness is not about being skinny. It's about being healthy mentally + physically. It's a LOT more attractive to be healthy mentally + physically than to just be skinny. Remember that.
Try A New Sport. Isn't it funny that as adults, we don't play most of the sports we did growing up? That leaves us either running, walking or riding a bike. Those are all great but oh my word at how much fun I'm having trying new sports! Marq and I recently started playing tennis. I had never held a racket so this was VERY new to me. Of course, I was a little nervous but would be lying if I didn't tell you I was more excited to buy all the tennis skirts. Listen when I tell you, "No one cares about how good or bad you are and the odds of someone watching you try your new sport are slim to none." After we overcame the fear of trying our first new sport, we tried yoga, (I tried) pilates--LOVE and am now into different types of workout classes. If you are someone who is intimidated by hitting the gym, ask a trainer or a friend to walk you through your first trip so you'll feel more comfortable and confident. We've all been there. You don't have to try everything. Pick something and see if you like it. Heck, you can even include your kids! For us, our son plays tennis with us and all three are able to take family bike rides with us.
Choose The Healthier Option. A lot of health and fitness is the fuel you feed your body. I'm not on a "diet" but I will mostly choose the healthier option. For me, this is something I do because I feel better when I eat healthier. I'm not trying to lose weight and haven't weighed myself in a very long time, but I know that as a mom, I need energy and when I eat healthy, I'm a lot nicer and more energetic. Someone once told me, you wouldn't need to diet if you made sure you chose the healthier option of whatever you were presented. Truth!
Hydrate. Hydrating has many benefits but for me, I drink a lot of water. You may already know about my obsession with La Croix. Make sure your getting in your H20! It's the absolute healthiest thing you can do for your body.
Meditate. I never understood this concept but since practicing Yoga, it's a must. I take time every single day whether that's first thing in the morning, the last thing I do at night or after an intense workout. Meditation to me, is clearing your mind of all the noise. Whether that's praying or pausing in silence. Make sure your making time to clear that space for your mental health. Especially if you're one that's on the phone, computer or around crying kids all day...
Reward Yourself. Make sure you are often rewarding yourself for staying on target. Living a healthy lifestyle takes dedication! A reward can be a mani-pedi after two weeks of fitness or a dessert after a week of eating healthy! There is absolutely nothing wrong with rewarding yourself for a job well done! I don't cheat myself out of the things I want because I know that a healthy lifestyle is longterm for me.
Bring A Friend. Make sure you're sharing your new lifestyle with your circle! Wellness, health + fitness are a lot more enjoyable when you include your partner, friend or kids! It's much more enjoyable and you can get healthier + happier together!
