The ABC's of SPF
Great read and write, from my friend and CEO, Madison!
We all want to wear sunscreen daily and are aware of the importance, but most formulas leave a film of white behind or are so greasy your makeup slips right off. Do we really need to choose between protecting our skin and a flawless makeup application? That is why we set out to discover a formula that we WANT to wear. This month, we are finally launching our highly anticipated Perfect Sunscreen. We named it this because it was only fitting…it is just perfect! This three-in-one formula is made with organic and plant-based ingredients to moisturize, prime and protect your skin from environmental damage caused by the sun. While this sounds magical and too good to be true- it is actually as easy as ABC! Read the ABC’s of our new SPF to discover why it is absolutely perfect!
Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice
Aloe is one of the most commonly used ingredients around the world because it is sustainable, easily accessible, and has an endless amount of uses and benefits. That is why it is the base ingredient in a majority of our skin care! The extracts and juices from aloe vera plants are commonly known for their hydrating properties and is a common go-to remedy to soothe burns and rashes- especially sunburn- ahh!Aloe is used as an emollient in our sunscreen to provide a smooth and easy application while hydrating your skin.
Buddleja Davidii Extract
Pronounced, “BUD-lee-uh duh-VID-ee-eye,” this beautiful ingredient is more simply known as the butterfly bush. The bush earned its name because its extract is a great source of nutrients for butterflies, but it is amazing for your skin too! Buddleja has powerful antioxidant properties and boosts the skin’s natural defense against permanent UV- induced damage.
Caesalpinia Spinosa Gum
This natural gum helps create the soft, silky texture of our sunscreen while softening your skin.
This coconut-derived ingredient naturally preserves our sunscreen. This ingredient allows us to avoid parabens and other preservatives that may be linked to hormone disruption and are generally frowned upon.
A fancy name for olive oil! Great for conditioning skin (and cooking).
Cichorium Intybus (Chicory) Root Oligosaccharides
Chicory root is the star of the show if you are looking for anti-aging benefits! It is known to produce an immediate firming effect while mimicking the collagen-boosting effects and long-term skin benefits of retinol — naturally!
Daucus Carota Sativa Seed Oil
We were all taught that carrots are good for your eyes, but no one ever mentioned how great they are for your skin! Like carrots, carrot seed oil is a great source of vitamins A, C, E and K. It is also incredibly nourishing for the skin and is strong in antioxidants, making it ideal for mature or sun-damaged skin.
Every 2 hours
This is how frequently the FDA recommends applying sunscreen when exposed to the sun.
Our family owned sunscreen manufacturer is passionate about the Earth and everything and everyone on it!
Glycerin is another commonly used ingredient in skin care. It is colorless, odorless, and has a syrupy texture. There are several variations of this ingredient, but ours is organic and plant-derived. Glycerin naturally draws water into the skin to maintain hydration and acts as an emollient for a smooth application.
The traditional use for this plant-based ingredient is as a skin conditioner, but it is also known for its antimicrobial and anti-fungal properties to aid in preservation.
This ingredient is responsible for keeping the ingredients in our sunscreen formula from separating — think of it as the peace-maker! It is naturally found in vegetable oils and is also present in our bodies.
Helichrysum Italicum Oil
This oil is extracted from the Immortelle Flower, also known as “The Everlasting Flower.” As you might have already guessed from its name, this unique and highly effective oil is known for its restorative and anti-aging properties. The Immortelle flower is also known as “the everlasting flower” because it never fades even after it has been picked!
Hydrolyzed Oat Protein
Oats have been used in skin care since the beginning of time to treat a variety of skin ailments. Hydrolyzed Oat Protein is naturally derived from whole oats and used to maintain elasticity and moisture in the skin. And the good news- it is gluten free!
A lightweight and easily absorbed emollient that is naturally derived from sugar beets or coconuts. We love it because it is a natural replacement for silicone that is produced using enzymatic catalysis which saves 60% on energy consumption and CO2 emissions compared to other processes — yay!
Isoamyl Cocoate is this ingredient’s fraternal twin, same amazing properties- different name!
Jojoba (Simmondsia Chinensis) Seed Oil
Jojoba seed oil is actually a wax, but because it has such a low melting point it usually exists as a liquid. This ingredient is interesting because it closely mimics our skin’s own protective barrier. Because of its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, Jojoba is often used to prevent or treat acne.
Keep out of the sun!
As much as possible at least. The peak sun intensity hours, when UV light is strongest, are between 10 AM and 3 PM.
Lavandula Angustifolia Oil & Lavandula Hybrida Oil
These related ingredients are both variations of Lavender Oil! Lavandula Hybrida Oil is more antiseptic than its French Lavender cousin, although they both offer skin-soothing properties and a relaxing scent.
According to The Skin Cancer Foundation- one person dies of melanoma every two hours.
Niacinamide (Vitamin B3)
Studies have shown that Vitamin B3 naturally (and dramatically) reduces the appearance of dark spots and fine lines. Like Chicory Root, it has the wrinkle-reducing power of Retinol. Need I say more?
Oxybenzone and Octinoxate
Oxybenzone and Octinoxate are common active ingredients in chemical sunscreens (not ours!) that have been proven to cause harm to coral reefs. In May, Hawaii legislators passed a bill banning the chemical sunscreens that will go into effect January 2021. Phew!
Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Oil
Rich in antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids, Avocado Oil is ideal for dry, sun damaged, or mature skin. This nutrient-rich ingredient has proven to help reduce the appearance of dark spots and even treat wounds.
While this ingredient sounds scary- I promise you it is not! In fact it is completely safe and non-toxic. The only active ingredient in our sunscreen, Zinc Oxide, is naturally derived from earth minerals. Because minerals are charged, or active, they tend to attract each other. When they come together, the UV-protecting minerals are not evenly dispersed and causes uneven protection — think splotchy sunburn. Polyhydroxystearic Acid prevents this from happening so your skin will be protected evenly!
Quit indoor tanning!
A.K.A- tanning beds! According to The Skin Cancer Foundation, more than 419,000 cases of skin cancer in the U.S. each year are linked to indoor tanning.
10% of the world’s coral reefs are at risk due to chemical sunscreens. One million species and 500 million people depend of coral reefs! Don’t worry- ours is coral reef safe!
Naturally derived from berries and fruits (yum!), this ingredient keeps water-based ingredients from separating.
Tocopherol (Vitamin E)
Vitamin E is a strong antioxidant that also helps hydrate and moisturize skin.
UV rays can cause burns or tans, but they also play an important role in our skin’s vitamin D production. So even though they can hurt us, we still need them! That is why it is important to wear sunscreen daily to protect our skin!
Purified water is essential!
One of the team players in making our sunscreen silky smooth!
Our sunscreen is vegan, cruelty-free, paraben-free, gluten-free, and worry-free.
The one and only active ingredient in our sunscreen is zinc oxide. This mineral is the safest option when it comes to active ingredients because it is naturally derived and provides powerful broad spectrum sun protection. And yes, it is safe for the environment!
